Contact/About Me
I began my career in massage therapy 25 years ago, with the Royal Accupressure Society of Alberta. Later, in 1987, I gave birth to my daughter. She was a Frank Breech delivery and I remember being terrified at the prospect of delivering a breech baby and the pain that would accompany it. My husband did whatever he could, but he was dealing with the ‘unknown’ and couldn’t relate to my pain. My first “doula” was a kindhearted cleaning lady that put a cold cloth on my forehead and fed me ice chips. She rubbed my hair and whispered encouragement in my ear. I was so thankful for her assistance, since it made the last hour of my labor bearable.
My second child was born a few years later and his delivery was normal. My husband was working out of town and missed the birth. My “doula” was a close friend that was with me for my entire labor and delivery. Her presence made my second birth so much calmer and I felt that I could manage the pain a lot better.
Later, after spending some years being home raising my children, I went back to school and became a Certified Esthetician. As I continued in my career, I could see that I was more interested in the wholistic aspect of the body and wanted to work towards a practice in wellness. Over the years, I have continued to add to my education with advanced massage techniques, seeking to help my clients live a healthier lifestyle. In 2004, I re-certified as a Registered Massage Therapist with the Northern Institute of Massage Therapy.
In 2005, I attended the Nursing Assistant program at NAIT and graduated at the top of my class. I later attended SAIT for the Lab Assistant program. With all my combined education, I have an excellent working knowledge of the human body and how it functions. I feel that taking the D.O.N.A. Doula course was a natural progression for me after attending the birth of my youngest brother and, later I was able to be a doula for my brother and his wife at the birth of my neice.
This past Spring, I also took my Lamaze Childbirth Education training. I am currently designing my curriculum for a 12 hour childbirth education class. I look forward to assisting other women to have a beautiful birth experience by giving them the support that is so necessary.
